52 WKC: Five Things You Like About You

Remember that 52 week challenge I started back in January 2016? Well I obviously failed! OOPS! Like I said in New Seasons There are still 3 months left in the year. I guess it’s a new year now so 12 months! It’s scary how fast time moves. Anyway, I want to hop back into it. Seriously this time!

This week (10) was “Five Things You Like About You.” My challenge with this topic isn’t about writing about myself. The challenge comes from trying to compliment myself without coming across as a conceited person. Hopefully my humbleness will be present in my tone. I wouldn’t want you to take my confidence as arrogance. But seriously, how can this post not sound a little conceited?

Let’s see. What do I like about myself? Personality wise or physical? Let’s start with personality.

Personality

Humor

I’d like to think I’m a funny person. I mean people laugh when I crack jokes. What if they’re actually laughing at me? Oh well. At least they’re laughing. I talked about how much I love to make people laugh in my 5 Things That Make Me Happy post. I think the ability to make other people laugh is a good quality to have.

Nurturing

I think I was born a nurturing person. It could be how I was raised or it could be my natural temperament. Babies and children always gravitate to me. I love kids though. My original career I was going after was nursing and I wanted to work in a nursery or on a Labor and Delivery unit. I got the chance to intern at a hospital and fell in love with the babies. Even when they cry, they’re so precious to me. I think kids can sense that in me and they always want to play when they’re around me. It’s not just a baby/child thing either. People come up to me and just talk. They tell me their stories and troubles. When someone is down I’m usually the one to bring them back up.

Driven

I like how driven I am. I see something and I work towards it. I have goals and I envision things a certain way. I try to do at least one productive thing a day. If I do more then hey. Go Kelsey! But at least one is my minimum. And that goes for anything as far as writing a blog post, reading a how-to business guide, or tackling a project. There’s always little things you can do to work towards your goals.

Physically

Eyes

I have my mom’s eyes. I just like how big they are and the shape of them. A thin line of eyeliner on the lower lid really emphasizes the shape of my eyes and I noticed that’s when I get the most compliments.

Smile

The other physical trait I like on me is my smile. I think I have a nice smile and I always get complimented on it. Slap a smile on my face with some eyeliner on my eyes and the guys melt. Haha just kidding!! Kinda…

I guess it’s nice to look at yourself as a whole and compliment what you like. I know personally I tend to be my worse critic so being able to appreciate myself is a nice distraction. I challenge you to do the same. Look at yourself in the mirror and think about all the things that make you, you. What is it that you love about yourself? And if you happen to write a blog post about it, I’d love to read it!!

New Seasons!

It’s been a long time since I’ve written a post. Too long. Embarrassingly long! The sad part is, everyday I wake up thinking about writing and I don’t. I must admit, I’ve been in a funk. 2016 hit me hard but I’m starting to realize that I’m the one making it worse by dwelling on things. It gets hard when you’re stuck. You tend to lose motivation and sight. But I refuse to let 2016 stop me. It’s been a tough year but it’s not too late to turn it around. We still have three more months.

With that being said…remember the 52 week challenge I wanted to participate in? Yea, the  one I completely failed at doing? Well wishful thinking right? Lol! Well like I said, we still have October, November, and December of 2016! So let’s do it! I’ll pick up where I left off and maybe do some of my favorites that I’ve missed along the way.

New Season

Cheers to a new season! Cheers to new beginnings!

WKC 7: A Friend

The topic for week 7 is a friend. I’m doing this week’s post waaay out of order because today is my best friend’s birthday!!! So I want to dedicate this post to my best friend Eneti! I’m really so grateful for our relationship. She understands me better than anyone sometimes and she’s always there with encouraging and caring words. I love this girl and appreciate her so much! Don’t start crying Eneti! I know you’re reading this haha. And I’m just getting started! Lol.

So let’s see, it all started back in 7th grade PE class at Stanford Middle School. Haha… Continue reading WKC 7: A Friend

52 WKC: 9 How Did You Do & Feel

This topic of the challenge, I’m supposed to talk about something I did, how I did, and how I felt about it. As you know, I’ve been on the job hunt. Well, for a full-time with benefits, grown up job in the fashion industry. I’ve had numerous interviews and it’s like fishing to me. I have to present myself in a way to make the interviewer know that I’m good stuff to grab and the interviewer has to present a job to me that I want to keep. They could easily not grab my line and I could also throw it back in the sea. The goal is hook and keep.

suit-up

I’m the type of person to get a little nervous before interviews but I’m able to calm myself enough to where people can’t tell I’m freaking out inside. There are a few things Continue reading 52 WKC: 9 How Did You Do & Feel

52 WKC: 6 The City You Live In

I grew up in beautiful Southern California in the most diverse city that I’ve ever known so far, Long Beach. Yes, the same Long Beach Snoop Dogg, Cameron Diaz, and many other celebrities are from. I actually went to the same high school they went to, Long Beach Poly. Not that that matters. I love Long Beach and you would too! Here’s three main reasons why!

Long Beach, California, USA

Diversity

To me Long Beach is a good representation of what America is. You can find so many different cultures in this area from food to festivities. I could walk a few blocks and get some authentic Mexican food, walk a little more for Pad Thai, cross the street for Pho take a bus for Lasagna, turn around for Gyros, take a short drive for Sushi, and skip back for a burger. I mean the list goes on. Long Beach is such a great place to try different foods from all over the world within a 10 mile radius. And the food is so good!

Not only can you expand your horizon here, you can expand your language and experience different cultures. Long Beach as a whole isn’t really dominated by one group of people. But we do have little communities within Long Beach that is dominated by a specific group. In a place as diverse as Long Beach, I expect that to happen. People tend to gravitate to people of similar lifestyles, cultures, and beliefs. That’s what a community is.

Weather

Most areas in Southern California are known for the great weather. We range from 70-85 degrees year round. Of course we have our chilly times under 70 and our hot times over 85 but the weather is usually something to brag about.  As far as the 70-85 degrees, I’m mainly talking about Long Beach and surrounding areas. Obviously not the entire Southern California has the same weather. Places like San Diego gets more rain and the mountains get snow. Yes, WE DO GET SNOW on the west coast. Just not at the beaches where I live.

Even though we have great weather just about daily, it’s not so great for our land. In Long Beach we don’t get much rain and we’re in a severe drought. The city is taking drastic measures to conserve water but all the efforts still isn’t enough. It’s so bad that when it actually does rain, people freak out. Rain is so rare out here that it has become such an exciting event for Southern Californians. It’s right up there with earthquakes.

There’s Always Something to Do and See

Long Beach is such a beautiful place. The city is filled with greenery and there are lots of things to do. You can spend the day at one of our many beaches. I prefer to go a little south at least to Belmont Shores and beyond where the water is cleaner.

The Pike in Downtown Long Beach is filled with local shops, restaurants, clubs, and bars. They also just opened up an outlet down the hill on Pine Ave. featuring stores like Nike, Converse, H&M and Forever 21. The Cinemark movie theater down there was renovated with lounge chairs for an at home experience. There are a variety of restaurants that line the Pike’s shore. You can get BBQ from Famous Dave’s and get seafood from Gladstone’s or Bubba Gump.

Across from Bubba Gump is our Aquarium and a walkway to our lighthouse. If you’re at the lighthouse, you can see across the water is a big ship. It’s the Queen Mary. There are a few tours on the Queen Mary and a museum on the ship. During October we have Dark Harbor. It’s a haunt similar to Knott’s Scary Farm and Halloween Nights At Universal Studios. I used to work as a monster and being as unbiased as possible, Dark Harbor is definitely a place to visit during the Halloween season.

Long Beach is such an artistic place. Art fills the city everywhere. We have local art shops and art shows, a Performance Arts Center where you can see Symphonic Orchestras play and there is a playhouse held by local actors and actresses. There are plenty of music festivals, art street walks, museums, and fashion shows throughout Long Beach. If you’re into the art scene, Long Beach is definitely a home for that.

Another spot I love in Long Beach is 2nd street and Naples. Second Street is a strip of bars and restaurants. It’s easy to bar hop and get a bite to eat. Naples is my favorite place to go during the Christmas season. The home owners have competitions on their Christmas decorations and they really go all out. I always wonder what their electricity bill is in December. But guessing by the looks of the homes, I think they can afford a little spike in their electricity bill for one month. It’s really a site to see!

I could go on because there really is a lot more to do in Long Beach than I mentioned. But maybe I should make a whole separate post about things to do in Long Beach! I love my city and I’m happy my parents decided to move here when I was 2. It’s part of the foundation of who I am today.

Long Beach has a Facebook page and they posted a video showing a little bit of how amazing the city is. I wish the video showed a little more of how diverse it is here and all the different cultural experiences you can have in Long Beach but I guess you’ll have to visit the city to see for yourself.

52 WKC: 5 Something Someone Gave Me

For my 23d birthday last year (October 2015) my best friend got me a massage, something I’ve always wanted to do. I’ve been to a spa where you go in different rooms of different temperatures and it had a jacuzzi area, but I’ve never gotten a massage.

I went this week and it was amazing! I was so relaxed and calm. I had a full body massage right up to my fingertips. Who knew that someone rubbing your hands with oil would feel so good. I couldn’t stop repeating in my head how good everything felt.

Indulgence Spa Day

My masseuse’s name was Irma. I went to the place in Long Beach called Indulgence. Here’s their website. Irma was amazing. She made me feel so relaxed and comfortable not only with her massage but with her spirit alone.

When I got there for my appointment, I signed in with the receptionist, who is great as well. She offered me wine or tea. I hesitated and she told me she’ll give me the wine because, “anyone who hesitates usually wants to say yes to the wine.” She was right. I did want the wine. I mean why not enjoy the total experience? I only hesitated because it was one in the afternoon.

I waited for them to prepare a room and they called me in on time. Irma took me to my room. Peppermint filled the halls and I later found out it’s from the warm towels they put on your back, legs, and feet after the massage. They were playing an instrumental soundtrack of calming noises and tunes. The room was painted different tones of brown and green.

I have to say there was a time when I was undressing that I got a little self-conscious. I realized that this lady was about to see my body in a very close up fashion. She would be rubbing my back rolls and seeing my two week old chipped nail polish fingers and toes. Side note: You know you could have the healthiest nails and nail beds but if your polish is chipped, it just looks so bad! Then I was trying to get comfortable laying on my stomach and having my face in that head rest thing, but my ginormous boobs kept choking me. She laughed when I tried tucking them in under me so I could breathe. She saw my struggle and offered me a pillow. I told her I had two pillows under me already and we both started laughing. But I had to remind myself that I was there to relax and I’m sure this lady has seen everything and if she hasn’t seen it yet, then she’ll probably see it eventually. I loosened up a bit and when I finally tucked my pillows away and she started massaging my sore shoulders all my worries and insecurities disappeared.

She was so kind and applied just the right amount of pressure. She caters the massage to where ever you need it the most. She asked me what area bothers me the most and I told her my back, shoulders, and neck. So she spent the most time on those areas.

I encourage you all to get a massage, a professional massage, even if it’s only one time in your life, get it! They’re super cheap on Groupon and Living Social and worth every penny. They’re different types of massages and different time lengths. Mine was an hour long full body massage, but if you only have 30 minutes or if you only want a foot massage, there is a massage that fits your needs.

52WKC: 4 Family Member

Before I jump into things, I’ve created a naming system for my 52 week challenge posts: 52WKC: week # & topic for that week. I figured, week 1, week 2 etc. would get a little confusing and seeing 52 week challenge would get annoying. So here it is 52WKC: 4 Family Member. (Also the last time I writing this introduction.)

This week I’m supposed to talk about a family member. I want to talk about my mom. I don’t even know where to start. I’m actually at a Panera Bread right now, sitting across from her as she fills out some paperwork and I write this post. We are very close. I’m close to my dad and sister too, but I’ll write about my mom for this post.

She’s such a remarkable woman. I’m very proud of her. She works so hard in everything that she does and everyone she talks to loves her. I mean who wouldn’t. She’s amazing!

My mom is my travelling partner, well actually we do a lot of things together. But I definitely got my adventurous side from her. We’ve been ziplining, horseback riding, cave tubing, hiking, and on road trips galore. She’s even went on a hot air balloon ride without me lol. We spend a lot of time together watching movies/ TV shows and taking walks. I love my mom so much and I would do anything for her. We’ve always had a really close relationship and we’ve gotten even closer as I get older.

I won’t keep rambling about how amazing my mom is. I’ll just show you! 🙂

Before I jump into things, I’ve created this naming system for my 52 week challenge posts: 52WKC: week # & topic for that week. I figured, week 1, week 2 etc. would get a little confusing and seeing 52 week challenge would get annoying. So here it is 52WKC: 3 Family.

This week I’m supposed to talk about my family. If you haven’t noticed by now, I’m a pretty family oriented person. I’m all about family and I’ve been blessed to have a family who is all about me. Well you know, not about me only, but they’re always there for me. I have an amazing support system, from my parents and sister to my aunts, uncles, grandparents, and football team amount of cousins. I want to post pictures of us but I better not. Not everyone wants to be on the internet like that. Lol.

My family is huge and we are all so close. Both sides of my family are pretty close to each other. We all look out for each other and take care of each other. We obviously have family issues sometimes, I mean every single long term relationship will have issues, especially if you’re close and care about each other. But aside from that we always bounce back to the close knit family we are.

52WKC: 2 Spouse/ Significant Other

Before I jump into things, I’ve created this naming system for my 52 week challenge posts: 52WKC: week # & topic for that week. I figured, week 1, week 2 etc. would get a little confusing and seeing 52 week challenge would get annoying. So here it is 52WKC: 2 Spouse/ Significant Other.

This week for my 52 week challenge, I’m supposed to be talking about a spouse or significant other. Well, I don’t have either at the moment. So what should I talk about? I guess right now my significant other is my work. But I’d rather not talk about being married to my career. I could talk about my exs. Ummm, let’s NOT. Marriage? Marriage.

When I was a kid, I used to dream about falling in love, my wedding, and living happily ever after. Let’s face it, I grew up with disney movies like Cinderella and The Little Mermaid. This fairytale life was embedded in me from childhood. I used to plan out my life: fall in love in my early 20s, get married around 24/25, and start having little babies around 26/27 and be done by 30. Well, I’m 23, single, with no interests. So much for planning. Ah well. I guess I didn’t take into account my own mindset at this age.

Now that I’m 23, I can’t imagine myself being married by next year. There’s so much I want to do still before marriage as a single woman, and later as a couple before we get married. There are stages to these things and I don’t want to rush them. Even if I do meet a guy, I can’t see myself married by next year, and I really can’t see myself having kids in the next 2! Silly me! What kind of plan was I trying to make?

Who knows what’ll happen. Maybe love finds me sooner than I’m anticipating. I mean, I’m still sort of a hopeless romantic. If it happens, it happens. It would be nice to have a significant other to share all these experiences with, but I still have way more living to do as an unwedded woman.

So cupid, as much as I may complain during the holidays and on valentine’s day about not having that special someone yet, I mean give me a break, I was a 90’s kid growing up with nothing but love stories, please save that little arrow for a little while.

52 Week Challenge — Week 1

I came across this 52 week challenge on Life or 30 Something Like it some time in September. So, I decided to wait until the new year to start it. I’ve always wanted to do one of these. I see them on instagram all the time but I always feel like I wouldn’t be able to keep up. I’ve decided to stop making excuses and just go for it. So here it is, week 1 of 52.

screenshot_2015-12-01-21-08-55-1.png

Why am I starting this challenge?

Well I already said I’ve always wanted to do one of these challenges but on a deeper level, I want to do this challenge because it lasts the entire year. I want to push myself to do something on my own without quitting. It’s like exercising for me. I want to do it and I’ll be good on day one. I’ll eat well-balanced and proportioned meals, exercise, stretch and do everything by the books. But then day six rolls around and that pizza, my bed, and tv looks a lot more appealing.

I’m taking on this challenge because it’s once a week. I think that’s manageable. I post at least once a week anyway, sometimes more. This challenge is also a great writing exercise. Anytime you have a topic that you didn’t come up with on your own, you push yourself to dig deeper, especially if it’s a topic you don’t want to talk about or have any interest in. I can already tell there will be some difficult topics that I’ll have to put more effort into. I’m excited about this challenge because it’s something I can work for, another goal, I guess. But why take on another goal when I already have so many for 2016? I say why not?!

So let’s see where this take us. I’ll try to post these on Sundays. I welcome you all to join me on this challenge.

Happy blogging and happy new year!

~Kelsey Sherri
